Shelter Pet of the Month – Meet Louie!
Our sweet Louie is a playful water bug that loves both people and other dogs. Sadly, however, Louie, a year and a half old stray, has spent the last 6 months living inside a cage at Indianapolis Animal Care and Control. Even worse, Louie is Heartworm positive. Heartworm is one of the deadliest diseases a dog can acquire if left untreated. However, it’s also one of the most preventable ailments. A simple pill each month protects animals from Heartworm.
Many people don’t know that Heartworm cannot be spread from dog to dog, but only through the bit of an infected mosquito. Unfortunately, sweet Louie is not the only dog at IACC that is Heartworm positive. While Heartworm treatment is covered in the $60 adoption fee at IACC, it is important to remember that Heartworm treatment is incredibly costly and takes away from other needs at the shelter.
So, what does all this mean for Louie? Well, he needs YOU! Louie will not be able to start treatment until he gets either an adopter or a foster home. Poor Louie is so full of life and deserves to be treated and given a chance at a happy, healthy life. The longer he goes without treatment, the worse the disease gets. Are you the one that can help save Louie?
Even if you cannot adopt Louie, but want to help support a him or another heartworm positive dog financially, please consider making a Donation to the Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care and Control General Fund and specifying that the donation go toward Heartworm treatment. Louie and all the others thank you in advance!
